Collins was drafted in the first round of the 1973 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was a four-time All-Star during his basketball career, and he won the Silver Medal with the United States men’s national basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He has also worked as a radio and TV announcer for various NBA games.
Despite his success as a professional athlete, Collins struggled with injuries throughout his career. He suffered from multiple broken bones in his feet, groin, and left knee over the course of his career. His last injury, a torn ACL in 1981, ended his playing career.
In 1986, Collins became a full-time NBA coach with the Chicago Bulls, where he led them to the playoffs three times in four years. After retiring from the NBA, Collins continued his work in politics. He served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2013. He was the Democratic nominee in the 2010 election for the 84th district seat in the state Senate, but lost the seat to Republican incumbent Stacey Reece.
During his time in the Georgia legislature, Collins wrote letters in defense of military chaplains who were targeted for their religious beliefs. He opposed the 2013 Violence Against Women Act and voted against the extension of federal domestic violence law to include same-sex couples.
He has also been a senior pastor at Chicopee Baptist Church in Gainesville and is currently a chaplain in the United States Reserves. He has a daughter who suffers from spina bifida, which has depleted a significant amount of his family’s finances.

Doug Collins is a native of Hall County, Georgia, in the Appalachian Mountains. He graduated from North Hall High School, then attended the University of Georgia and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and criminal law from the former. He has a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a private practice in Hall County. He is married to Lisa. They have a son and a daughter. He and his wife are members of Chicopee Baptist Church in Gainsville.
