Paulina was born in Mexico City on 17 June 1971 to Enrique Rubio Gonzalez and Susana Dosamantes. She started her career at an early age and took acting, jazz, painting and singing lessons at the Centro de Educacion Artistica in Mexico City. She has a half-sister named Ana Paola Rubio and her grandmother and great-grandmother were both singers.

In 1982, she joined the Mexican band Timbiriche and became very popular. She sang in many Spanish films and was a hit on the television show El Nuevo Dia. She was a part of the band for over ten years until 1991. During this time, she recorded 11 albums and appeared in some movies as well. After her breakup with the band, she started her solo career. She released her first album called La Chica Dorada in 1992 and then followed it with 24 Kilates, Planeta Paulina, and Paulina. These albums helped her gain more fame and recognition and also boosted her earnings.
