Weiskopf was born in Massillon, Ohio on November 9, 1942. He attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland and then Ohio State University. After graduating from the university in 1964, Weiskopf turned pro and began competing on the PGA Tour. He won his first tournament in 1968, the Andy Williams San Diego Open Invitational. He went on to win sixteen more PGA Tour championships, with his most successful decade coming in the 1970s. He also had four runner-up finishes at The Masters.
